A Little History ...
The Little River Railroad will be celebrating the 100th birthday of their #110 steam engine train. This unique engine is the smallest standard gauge Pacific locomotive ever built. This one of a kind engine ordered special in 1911 for the Little River Railroad & Lumber Company out of Townsend, Tennessee. The custom locomotive was ordered to handle the tight corners needed to haul lumber out of what is now the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, retiring in 1938. In 1940 it was sold to the Smokey Mountain Railway and ran until the early 1950's. In 1966 the #110 was abandoned in Shook's Gap, Tennessee. In 1972 the #110 was purchased and restored and made its first run as the Little River Railroad in Pleasant Lake, Indiana in 1975. In the 100 years, she was only out of service for about 20 years. In 2004, the #110 and her current owner celebrated a milestone. The #110 has been with the current Little River Railroad for longer than either of the previous owners and has been in service the entire time. In the 35 years since being restored in 1975, 110 has hauled approximately 200,000 passengers and traveled over 300,000 miles in three states. In November 2011, the #110 will celebrate her 100th birthday!

#110
11:00 Friday & Saturday-Hillsdale Train
10:00 & 2:00 Sunday leading the Quintuplet Train
The #110 is a 4-6-2 Pacific type locomotive weighing approximately 58 tons. It is the smallest of its kind ever built for standard gauge and it is also a one-of-a-kind locomotive. It was custom built for the original "Little River Railroad" in Townsend, TN. 110 hauled logs out of what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She has been running for the Little River Railroad since 1972.

#1
1:00 Friday & Saturday-Quincy Train
10:00 & 2:00 Sunday- Quintuplet Train
The #1 is a 0-4-0T tank engine. The #1 is still a mystery as to its age, we do know that its frame and wheels were built in 1908. It is doubtful that it has its original boiler. The #1 is likely a conbination of numerous locomotives of its type. Weighing less than 25 tons, less than 1/2 of what the #110 weighs. Ironically, because of its weight distribution on its axles, it can pull as much as the #110, just not for as long. The #1 was purchased from the LaPorte County Steam Historical Societyin 2000. After a 3 year restoration, it made its first run in over 35 years in 2004. |

#6
11:15 Friday & Saturday-Quincy Train
10:00 & 2:00 Sunday- Quintuplet Train
The #6 is a 0-4-0 tank engine built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in September, 1924 for the Viscose Company in Roanoke, Virginia. In the early 1960's the #6 was sold to the Gem City Iron & Metal Company in Pulaski, Virginia. In September 2004 the #6 was purchased by current owner, Scott Symans of Dunkirk, New York. From September 2004 to June 2007 Scott completely restored the #6 to operating condition. |
#75
10:45 Friday & Saturday-Quincy Train
10:00 & 2:00 Sunday- Quintuplet Train
The #75 is a 0-4-0 tank engine built in 1930 by Vulcan Iron Works of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. The Flag Coal Company of Avoca, PA purchased the engine from Vulcan Iron Works. We are not sure what the locomotive was used for at that time, probably for switching coal cars in preparation for shipment. In 1935 the engine was sold to Solvay Process Company in Jamesville, NY, when its number was changed to #75. It was purchased and restored by John & Byron Gamling. Today it travels all over the country making guest appearances on many tourist lines and museums. |

This is the original builder's photo taken in 1931 when the 0-6-0 tank engine built by Vulcan Iron Works of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. The Leigh Valley Coal Company of Hazlenton, PA purchased the engine from Vulcan Iron Works. In 1954 the engine was sold to Heidelberg Coal Company in Avoca, PA. It was stored in the D & H roundhouse at Carbondale until #126 was purchased by John & Byron Gamling in the Fall of 1993. This will be the first public operation of the #126 since being restored! |
